UPDATE  24th Dec  Viral disease outbreak.

AgriBio and AAHL have made a provisional diagnosis of Reo virus as the cause of the current disease outbreak.

What is Reo Virus?
Reo viruses are widespread and are commonly found in many types of birds including chickens. In many cases it is hard to determine their importance . Sometimes they are there but appear  not  to be causing disease. Some Reo viruses however have been implicated in disease outbreaks. Reo viruses have been associated with disease in pigeons in Europe , China , South Africa  and other countries. AgriBio are fairly confident that the virus they are seeing on the EM images is a Reo but have suggested that at the moment the diagnosis is only provisional. A definitive diagnosis will be made once the viral cultures and gene sequencing are complete ( next week ). There are no Reo vaccines in Australia. There are however vaccines for similar viruses that may confer some cross immunity. We are seeking the advice of some vaccine specialists. More detailed information can be found on The Melbourne Bird Veterinary Clinic home page. More information will be made posted as soon as it is available

*Virus Alert*

20/12/16

Dear GMPF member,

As per previous emails, the Victorian Federations are currently experiencing an out break of some kind of virus,

What we don’t know is what kind of virus it is.

But what we do know is that we need to all work together during these testing times

All Victorian Federations are working closely with Dr Colin Walker in identifying this virus, and in turn creating a program.

In the meantime I ask all members who experience unusual and/or sudden deaths to report them to the GMPF secretary at the very least, and preferably contact Dr Colin Walker (03 9764 9000) as well.

All notices will be kept confidential.

Please note that we as flyers are in this together, and we must work together.

Sharing your experiences will possibly map areas of infection and help identify the cause sooner.

I must implore that members do not turn this already bad situation into a worse one by conducting witch hunts. No individual, (or group of individuals), are responsible for this outbreak, and it is still not yet known how it has arrived. Venting your frustrations on social media is counter productive, and not solving the issue.

In the meantime please practice sound biosecurity practices. It would be advisable to avoid movement of birds between lofts, and avoid visiting other lofts.

Best Regards

Dominic Paruit
GMPF Secretary

 *URGENT MESSAGE TO ALL MEMBERS*

“A readily transmissible viral disease has been identified in racing pigeons in Victoria this week. Affected lofts experience mortality rates of approximately 30 %. Initial testing has ruled out Adeno, PMV and Herpes virus infections.

The virus is likely, however, to be the same virus that affected WA racing lofts earlier this year. Testing has identified a number of virus’ as possible causes with one in particular being most likely. It may be that some poultry vaccines will be able to protect pigeons. Diagnostic work continues.

In the meantime every effort should be made to avoid the movement of birds between lofts. Some fanciers may wish to keep their birds locked down. Similarly flyers should avoid visiting other lofts.

Further information will be posted as soon as it is available.

Affected birds develop green diarrhoea, start to vomit , become hunched and usually die within 24 hours. Fanciers who think their birds may have the disease should contact the Melbourne Bird Veterinary Clinic on 03 9764 9000”

A message from the President:

I would like to welcome all our new and old members to the start of racing this weekend and wish everyone success for the 2016 season. We all look forward to the first race on the new GMPF transporter.

This season has already seen many changes and as the season develops we will see many more!

The GMPF pigeons will travel to races in the most modern transporter the GMPF has ever had and the expectations from the flyers is high at the start of the season.

I hope that the competition will be the strong, along with the dedication to the birds, so that they may compete over the many weeks to come.

I wish everyone success and fly well!
